The technologies of social media – such as facebook and linkedin – have transformed the opportunities for networking since we’re no longer limited by geographic proximity and schedule conflicts. That said, I think it’s probably helpful to differentiate the “fruits” of networking sites with respect to employment. I’ll highlight linkedin and facebook as “apples” and “oranges” in one important way.

My family speaks fluent “Star Wars.” In fact, we’ve lost track of how many times we’ve watched any/all of the movies. And, whenever we share a weekend with our adult kids, there’s an overt contest to see which one of us best re-uses a SW quote for the time we’re together. So maybe it’s predictable that I occasionally think about online social media in Star Wars terms.
